Install a new radio and retain handlebar audio controls in select 1996-13 Harley-Davidson motorcycles

iDatalink makes it easier to upgrade your Harley’s audio

This two-piece iDatalink combo kit allows you to install a new radio in select 1996-2013 Harley-Davidsons. iDatalink’s HRN-SW-HD1 wiring interface works in conjunction with their Maestro ADS-MSW module to retain the use of your handlebar-mounted audio controls, including the Push-to-Talk and Squelch buttons (if present).

The magic of the Maestro

Before you start your installation, you’ll need to visit the iDatalink site to program the Maestro adapter to work with your motorcycle and your new stereo. Using the intuitive web programming interface, each factory button can be assigned a specific radio function, so you can control your tunes without taking your eyes off the road ahead.

And here’s a great feature that’s unique to this adapter — you can also choose and assign a secondary "press and hold" radio function to each factory button, effectively doubling what can be controlled. For example, touch the "Volume Up" button, and it’ll turn up the music. Hold down the "Volume Up" button, and you can switch on the loudness on your car stereo (or any other secondary function you choose).

The ADS-MSW works with a variety of aftermarket receivers, and you can install the ADS-MSW yourself if you have some experience installing audio gear. You’ll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your motorcycle to connect this adapter.

An essential adapter

The HRN-SW-HD1 wiring adapter plugs right into the ADS-MSW module, which then plugs into the steering wheel control input or wired remote input on your new radio. You’ll need to splice the bare-end wires on this iDatalink harness to the wires on the harness that plugs into your new radio.

Once you’ve installed the adapter and module, you’ll be able to program short- and long-hold audio functions to each handlebar button. You can only retain your handlebar audio controls with radios by Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, Dual, Eclipse, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sny.

Note: You’ll need a computer (PC or Mac) to install the firmware for this wiring interface.
